AES 2005 – Barcelona here we come!

Dear reader,

We hope we are not being too presumptuous, that when you see the word You/Com you automatically associate it with (tele-)communication solutions for the broadcast world.
We want to affirm this claim to fame during AES 2005 by demonstrating a number of
out-of-the ordinary communication solutions. To start off with, let’s talk about the Tieline reporter codecs that distinguish themselves in every aspect from existing portable codecs.

Tieline codecs offer you more!

Until recently Tieline codecs were renowned for their formidable performance over POTS lines. Since the introduction last year of the G3 series of codecs, in which the complete range of ISDN capabilities was integrated, even the “only ISDN” broadcast stations are sitting up and taking a keen interest. Thanks to their compatibility with existing makes of codecs, the G3 series can easily be incorporated into the existing infrastructure of the radio stations. Even devoted ISDN users are now discovering that POTS quality is in no way inferior to ISDN and what’s more, that in the “outside world” POTS is more available than ISDN. If you include the possibilities of GSM (HSCSD) and in the near future audio- over-IP, what more could you want? The Tieline G3 codecs are certainly communications device suited for all networks.

Let’s remind ourselves about the quality:

  • over ISDN: 20 kHz stereo
  • over one POTS line: 15 kHz mono
  • over two POTS lines: 15 kHz stereo
  • over GSM: 7,5 kHz
  • over GSM (HSCSD): 15 kHz
  • over satellite: 15 kHz
  • and shortly over IP:
    20 kHz mono and stereo!

The separate duplex communication connection as well as the possibility to remotely control the field unit from the studio (yes, even adjust the volume levels from a distance) make it clear why Tieline codecs are so popular.

Since April 2005 the Commander G3 is available as a 19” rack mount unit. It comes in two versions. The 1RU has front panel LEDs and can be controlled and configured from any Windows compatible computer. It also features an optional 2RU front panel hardware control interface, which can be attached to the 1RU or located in a studio for remote control of the 1RU. More details can be found on the enclosed brochure.

There are so many more features of the Tieline products we could highlight. The Commander G3 for instance is the portable field unit, which has a rack mounted counterpart. But there is also the i-Mix G3, which is a 6-input digital codec/mixer and also includes an audio router and software matrix to custom route all audio paths including the separate communication channels. I-Mix was used at the 2004 Games in Athens and the Euro2004 Football championships in Portugal. It is a communication device par excellence which can deliver live programs, take live callers and keep everyone in communication both on-air and off-air.

Mobile phone, the global communicator

The GSM reporter interfaces (RS110, RS130, RS250 etc.) that You/Com has on offer are in use in hundreds of radio stations. Check our website for the reference list. The success of this small and practical unit has persuaded us to launch a GSM reporter interface, PART3, that includes an MP3 flash recorder. Besides doing live reports using the mobile phone, it is also possible to send pre-recorded items as a file in top quality to the studio without the intervention of a PC. The PART3 is even smaller than the renowned RS110. PART3 will be demonstrated during AES and serial production is expected to commence after IBC.

Clear communication with the StudioSet

The two most important applications of the StudioSet, telephone hybrid and 4-wire communication over ISDN, can also boast a long list of happy customers. Particularly when the StudioSet is the receiver of GSM calls or those using a GSM reporter interface calling in to the studio, the difference in sound quality is noticeable. This makes the StudioSet unique. After all, there is a full digital 4-wire connection between a mobile phone and StudioSet, resulting in a loud and clear connection (no noise or crosstalk!).

Radio over the Internet!

The WebRadio is a communication device allowing you to listen to the radio using the Internet, but without a PC! The manufacturer, Solutions Radio B.V., now has more than 10.000 WebRadios in the field, in Europe and North America. In-house distribution of radio programs in radio stations is becoming an interesting application. Think too of all those listeners who could tune in to ethnic radio, hotel radio, sports radio, reading for the blind, church radio, in-store music distribution, community radio, etc. etc. This small, but intelligent unit is having an enormous impact on the distribution of (audio) information to those, who previously were shut off from the Internet, either because they didn’t have a pc or are pc-illiterate. It’s so easy, it’s just a case of plug and play. All you need is a telephone or ADSL connection. An ideal business opportunity for those who wish to set-up a subscription based program for a special-interest-group.

Versatile solution for the conversion of many audio programs to a DVB platform

Until recently the distribution of radio signals into a DVB platform (satellite, cable or terrestrial) did not receive due attention. The MXTS offers a state-of-the-art solution to do so. The MXTS guarantees the conversion of audio signals in all possible formats into an ASI transport stream and also includes ancillary data (RDS) per radio channel. One MXTS 19” rackmount unit (3HE) can handle 20 mono or 10 stereo programs as well as a number of high performance multi-channel programs such as Dolby 5.1, dts or apt-x. The MXTS has been developed by our partner Headroom in Berlin and tested in close co-operation with the IRT (Institut für Rundfunktechnik) in Munich. It is available as from today!

More communication devices we have on offer are:

  • MusicamUSA codecs (ISDN, X.21, IP, 2MB)
  • Audio TX Communicator software codec (ISDN and IP)
  • Audio TX STL – IP hardware codec
  • Portable transmitters for VHF and UHF (Diport 10/3 and Diport 10/4) with talkback channel
